BookChain

The installation is a neighbourhood book-exchange station that also serves as a stage for local art. You leave a book you’ve already read and take one that’s waiting for its next reader, instead of books being abandoned on a street corner.

The structure’s horizontal layers act as bookshelves, niches and seating surfaces, inviting passers-by to stop, browse and sit down. The screens face outward toward the street and display works by local artists, exposing them to everyone who walks by.

Chance encounters between neighbours form around the books and the art. A book passed from hand to hand, or a piece shown on the screen, becomes a shared topic of conversation and brings people together.

The stations are placed at central points in the neighbourhood, generating foot traffic of people who stop and spend time there. This activity can translate into a benefit for the small businesses around them, such as the nearby café or corner shop, and strengthens local street life.
